Intel's Ultra-Low Voltage Processors

Intel's latest processors, code-named Merom processor family, the Core 2 Duo U7600 and U7500 ultra-low voltage (ULV) processors. These are made for use in small notebooks and tablets, as well as in ultra-mobile PCs. This is the first two ULV processors in Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 clocked at 1.2 GHz and U7500 at 1.06 GHz which are designed to provide lower power consumption and cooler operation than other Core 2 Duos. These dual core ULV processors provide TDP (thermal design power) of 10 watts, while the other Meroms have TDP of 17W and 34W. But, ULV CPUs have slower clock speeds.

Intel’s U7600 and U7500 both have 2MB of L2 cache and a 533 MHz front-side bus, which is also slower than FSBs of other Core 2 Duo processors providing speed of 677 MHz.

Like all Core 2 Duo chips, U7600 and U7500 support 64-bit operating systems and software. They are now available in the market and one of the compute company that uses this technology is the Panasonic.

PHIVOLCS - Baguio

PHIVOLCS - Baguio Station is a government agency that is responsible of monitoring the activity of the tectonics plates below and detect the earthquakes and volcanic activities. The person in-charge told us that it is impossible to predict an earthquake or volcanic eruption.

Since the our country is included in the Ring of Fire, they perform their task using various equipments. They have a broadband seismograph which uses the telephone line or radio frequencies and display results in a computer. This device has a wide range. They also have a short period seismograph which interprets results graphically. This however has a narrow range but is useful if there id no electricity. Both devices are used to measure the vibration or any movement in the earth’s crust.

Experiencing White Water Rafting

Philippines is home of a number of large rivers, particularly in Mindanao. White water rafting is gaining popularity in Cagayan de Oro City. My students and I came form Davao City. to experience a different kind of adrenalin rush. We are mountaineers and we’ve seen a lot of scenery at the peaks of the mountains. The beauty that we witnessed along the river marked in our heart and mind that we will come back soon bringing the entire mountaineering club.

Information and Communications Technology

Information technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), is “the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware.” IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information, securely.

Recently it has become popular to broaden the term to explicitly include the field of electronic communication so that people tend to use the abbreviation ICT (Information and Communications Technology).

Today, the term information technology has ballooned to encompass many aspects of computing and technology, and the term is more recognizable than ever before. The information technology umbrella can be quite large, covering many fields. IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the management and administration of entire systems.

PAG-ASA Weather station In Baguio

On our first plant visit, we went to PAGASA. We were introduced to the equipment used to measure atmospheric pressure, wind and wind velocity, amount of rainfall and relative humidity. A reading is done in a 3 hour interval or 1 hour interval is there is a possible typhoon coming towards the country. The data is sent to the central office for analysis and used for forecasting the weather.

The person in-charge showed us the chart from the microbarograph that indicates that a typhoon is coming. We saw a V-shaped graph which means that there is a drop in atmospheric pressure when a typhoon is coming and goes back to its normal reading when it already far from the country.

With that highly sensitive device, we can directly observe that a possible typhoon is coming.

Palindrome

A Palindrome is a word that read the same in both directions: forward and backwards. Examples are pup and nun. Its origins date back to at least 79 A.D. Palindromes are also called Sotadics, after the poet Sotades. He used palindromes frequently in his satirical poetry.

Early palindromes reversed the words and not the letters. some reorder complete words instead of each letter. Another form consists of words which contain symmetrical letters that look the same when turned upside down. In languages which employ a writing system other than an alphabet, a palindrome is still what it is - a sequence of characters from writing system that remains the same when reversed.

Our Companion

Fungi grow in terrestrial as well as in aquatic environment. In other words, fungi are everywhere.

Fungi is nuisance as regarded by many. They can destroy crops, bring diseases like ringworm, spoil food and clothes. But fungi have proven their worth to humans, even to some plants and insects. The antibiotic penicillin, which stops bacterial growth, comes from molds of the genus Penicillium. Fungi is also used in making bread, beer, wine and vitamins.

Fungi are an everyday part of our lives. They can make life hard, but they can also make it easy.

Vanilla

A Vanilla is widely used as flavoring for beverages, ice cream, and chocolates, as well as in baking and in making perfumes. This flavoring is extracted from the vanilla orchid.

The vanilla orchid is a vine, climbing over trees or poles, reaching as high as its pillar would allow. Its rootlets attach the vanilla to its pillar or to the soil. The vanilla blooms for about two months, its flowers lasting at most a day.

Its flowers are hermaphrodites, they contain both male and female organs. Natural pollination can only be carried out by a small bee found in Mexico. Vanilla growers use artificial pollination, in which they press the anther to the stigma so that the flower will self-pollinate and bear fruit. Its flowers are short-lived and must be checked by growers for new blooms each day.

The vanilla essence is extracted from its fruit. The fruit itself is odorless, but during curing, the compound vanillin is secreted within the beans. This compound gives vanilla its odor and flavor. The vanilla essence may also come from synthetic vanillin.

The use of vanilla as flavoring is not a modern discovery. It started from the Aztecs in heir chocolate beverage, then the Spanish brought it to Europe.

Iodized Salt

Iodine is an important mineral for normal physical and mental growth. Much of the body's iodine is found in the thyroid gland, which secretes hormones related to normal metabolism, body temperature, growth and muscle function. Its lack can lead to goiter and impeded mental and physical growth.

Seafoods such as clams, oysters and seaweeds are rich sources of iodine. People living near seacoasts are not as prone to iodine deficiency as those living inland or in the mountains. Another source of iodine is iodized salt. Ii is a salt which undergoes a process to absorb the mineral iodine, which it does not normally contain. Iodized salt may be fine or coarse and may be sold packed or unpacked.

Iodized salt loses its iodine when subjected to heat. To avoid losing the iodine in the salt, it is advisable to add iodized salt after cooking. The iodized salt should be placed away from heat or direct sunlight.

Biodegrabable Plastics

Everyone knows that plastics are non-biodegradable. This means that they do not decay and turn into soil even after so many years.

Not anymore! Because of modern science, there are some kinds of plastics that are biodegradable. These are called bioplastics. These plastics came from materials and ingredients that are biodegradable. Some are made from starch coming fro corn and potatoes. Others come from the proteins of soy beans. Others are made of cellulose, the chemical that makes up the leaves and stems of plants.

Many people were afraid that these plastics would be weak and easy to tear. But scientists were able to make them strong as regular plastics. Some are even stronger.

Unlike regular plastics that melt with heat, many bioplastics can stand very high temperatures. Some will not melt even at 100 degrees Celsius, the boiling point of water.

Climbing a mountain is not an easy hobby. One needs to be physically fit and fully equipped. Mt. Kitanglad is one the the high mountains in Mindanao. It is located in Bukidnon.
